4A Correction on the SEVEN candle MenorahDec 30, 2008
By Polly
The following gives a great explanation of the SEVEN branched menorah, and distinguishes it from the more commonly seen nine branch menorah. Hope this helps. "One of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith is the menorah, a seven-branched candelabrum used in the Temple. The kohanim lit the menorah in the Sanctuary every evening and cleaned it out every morning, replacing the wicks and putting fresh olive oil into the cups. The illustration at left is based on instructions for construction of the menorah found in Ex. 25:31-40.

It has been said that the menorah is a symbol of the nation of Israel and our mission to be "a light unto the nations." (Isaiah 42:6). The sages emphasize that light is not a violent force; Israel is to accomplish its mission by setting an example, not by using force. This idea is highlighted in the vision in Zechariah 4:1-6. Zechariah sees a menorah, and God explains: "Not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit."

The lamp stand in today's synagogues, called the ner tamid (lit. the continual light, usually translated as the eternal flame), symbolizes the menorah. Many synagogues also have an ornamental menorah, usually with some critical detail changed (for example, with only 6 candles) to avoid the sin of reproducing objects of the Temple.

The nine-branched menorah used on Chanukkah is commonly patterned after this menorah, because Chanukkah commemorates the miracle that a day's worth of oil for this menorah lasted eight days. "

The menorah's seven-branched golden candelabra of the Tabernacle signifies the seven days of creation.

The light emanating from the 7 branched menorah was said to represent the flames of God from the burning bush, but the purpose of 7 branches represented the days. The branches with almond blossom shapes represent the tree of life. The almond is one of the first trees to blossom in the spring in Israel.

Unlike the 9 branched Hanukkiah ( Hanukkah menorah) there is NO elevated Shamash or servant/helper candle for the 7 branched Temple menorah. I state this in response to the story that the center candle being "elevated" represents the Shabbat. The instructions in Exodus and the most ancient images of the Temple menorah do not bear this out as there is no elevated shamash candle depicted.( Including the image on the Arch of Titus of the one the Romans carried off) SOME modern 7 branched menorahs have such a center candle elevated ONLY so that the menorah is not exactly representative of the menorah in the Temple as explained above. Shalom :)"

5Looks beautiful on our "Chrismukkah" treeJan 11, 2010

This beautiful carving out of lovely olive wood looked great on our holiday tree and meant a lot as a gift between loved ones in a "blended" family.

2A bit expensive for what you get - also I feel slightly trickedJan 05, 2012

So, my wife recently started work at a Jewish day school and I wanted to buy her an ornament to reflect this big move (her first teaching job!). This ornament looked nice and was one of the best that I could find with Prime shipping (at the time of this review), and I liked that it was wooden. In theory, I also liked the idea of it being hand carved (though based on the photos I had my doubts) - I hoped it was something that would hold up over time.

As it turns out, the ornament was without a doubt NOT "hand carved", but rather was cut via a laser (water?) cutter or something of the sort. Honestly, that's ok as I wasn't totally expecting to have it hand carved, but it was also super light and cheap feeling. NOT something that will hold up over time. Sort of like balsa wood. My wife actually already broke off one of the candles (in her carry on luggage). To be fair, this is obviously a tree ornament and would hold up just hanging on a tree.

For $15, I expected something nicer, something less cheap looking/feeling.

Look: 3/5
Quality: 3/5
Value: 2/5
Packaging: 2/5
"Hand Made" issue tipped this to a 2/5

Final: 2/5

PLEASE NOTE:
(This does not effect my review score as many may not be bothered by this and it's more of a personal opinion) I felt tricked by the product description. The "explanation card" that comes with this basically says that the money that is made from the sale of the ornament will go to providing resources to keep Christian "witnesses" in Israel. While the seller [EDIT: The original seller, I'm not sure if the merchant I purchased this from Amazon was the original creator/seller or not] is of course free to do whatever they please with the money they earn, I felt it was a slight slap in the face to be ordering a Jewish ornament which was actually created to help fund a Christian crusade focused at conversions in other countries. I myself am a non-believer, but am bothered by the fact that I was informed of this when I received the product.

Again, my feelings did not change my rating, but I feel as though it's a good thing for people to realize before purchasing this product.

This menorah has 6 candle holders (plus the shamos). Hanukah menorahs have 8 candle holders for the 8 days of Hanukah. d'oh?
